Its not important that you are with any institution. Your problem is probably a technical one, but you have given us zero clues what goes wrong or what your system is or your connection.

But if your college wants you to use Second Life, they should also be able to assist you in doing so.

We have a hard time guessing what the problem might be when we have absolutely no information to go on.  I suggest taking time to read the Second Life Quickstart Guide so that you have basic information about how to enter SL and get started.  Beyond that, if you are having specific problems logging in:

1. Contact your own instructor, who should be knowledgeable enough to help.  If you are entering SL as part of a course assignment, it is your instructor's primary responsibility to tell you how to perform the assignment, to be sure that you have the proper equipment, and to offer on-site support.

2. Consider possible solutions listed in https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Login-failure/ta-p/700109 and  http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/login_fail

3. Return here and tell us specifically what the problem is, including a full description of your own computer system and its Internet connection, the SL viewer that you have downloaded and installed, and any error message that you have received, plus any steps you may have already taken.

Amy, there are so MANY things that could be causing the problem...a bad internet connection, trying to connect via your college LAN (and them blocking access to "games"), substandard computer specifications....

Read the system requirements and the Quick Start page, and if you are still having problems after that, come back and edit your post to add new information.
