It doesn't make any difference whether you are a bot or not, the trick to staying on line 24/7 is to never log off.  It's that simple.  If you're not a bot, chances are pretty good that your av will spend a lot of time standing in one spot and acting comatose, but you'll still be there.  If you want to run an account as a bot (technically, a scripted agent), you'll have to register the account properly and then install software on an external server somewhere to host your bot.  Read http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Bot .

No. The idea is to have an account dedicated to being a scripted agent. It's a real pain to switch back and forth.

Rolig is quite right...to stay online 24/7, just don't log off and don't turn off your PC or internet modem.

But...please DON'T!  Unless you actually have something that you need your avatar to do (either under your control or under program control as a scripted agent) please don't suck up resources that the active Residents could be using.

Bots are run by a specialized viewer. such viewers often have added in artificial intelligence. Some are retail products.

The SL Wiki has an article titled: Second Life bot software comparison. It was last updated in early July 2016. The page appears to get frequent updates. 

You'll learn bots can hosted from your local computer or by a commercial host.

Another group of bots are named SmartBots. Check them out.

If you want to keep your avatar logged  in indefinitely, you need to change a setting in Preferences. It is the viewer that times out and logs you off. Look on the GENERAL tab for Away timeout:

You have choice of 2, 5, 10, 30 minutes, and never.

When you are logged in you are using resources. So, if you aren't accomplishing something while logged in, the rest of us would appreciate it if you logged out. Thanks you.
