If I properly understand what's happened, it sounds as if someone sent you a card that tricked you into granting it permission to debit your account.

I would immediately contact LL, both via an AR and also via Live Help (if you are not a premium member and the amount you have lost is sufficient to merit it, it might be worth taking out premium membership at least for a month), and ask for the matter to be investigated.

It will be easy enough for LL to see from your payment records what's happened.

As Innula says, you are the victim of a fairly common scam.  An object cannot take your L$ unless you give it permission, but it is easy to create an object that will confuse a newbie, a non-English speaking resident, or simply someone who isn't paying attention.  Once you have agreed to let the object have permission to take L$ from your account, there's no way to change your mind.  All you can do is make an Abuse Report.  If you have the object, delete it.

This is one of the three nastiest scams in Second Life.  All of them can be avoided with just a minimum of common sense and caution.

1.  The Account Debiting Object.  This is the one that got you.  Some things in SL, like tip jars, product vendors and rental boxes that you use in your business, need to have access to your account to work properly.  But scammers can build this into an object that tries to trick you into giving it permission to take $L from your account.  SOLUTION:  These ALWAYS produce a prominent caution message warning you that the object is requesting permission to take $L from you.  Simply do not click the "Allow" button!

Note that the object can continue to drain your account as long as it is in world.  Delete it, detach it, take it back into your inventory.

2.  Phishing.  Scammers post a URL in group chat, in local chat, or in an IM to you, or in an email or private forum message.  When you click the link, you see a page that looks like an official SL login page.  If you enter your user name and password, they are sent to the scammer.  Then he can log in to your account and take all your $L, delete your inventory, or even use your account to scam others and get you banned from SL.  SOLUTION:  Learn to recognize false URLs...or better yet, don't click directly on URLs from strangers, no matter how you receive them.

3.  The Empty Box.  Some scammers make a throwaway account, and set up a Marketplace store advertising expensive, apparently high quality items.  If you buy one, you only get an empty box!  SOLUTION:  Don't buy stuff on the Marketplace from very new avatars, especially if they have no in-world store.

If Linden Lab recovers L$ that were stolen, they do their best to return them to people they were stolen from. If the person who stole them has processed the credits and transferred USD out of SL, however, they have no legal power or ability to recover them. It's worth remembering that L$ are not money, although they feel like it. They are "in world tokens", useful as a medium of exchange between residents in Second Life but worthless outside -- like Monopoly money. Review the TOS, especially section 4.5.
