It's Murphy's law. You car always breaks down just when you're getting late for an important appointment. Same with servers.

Just like everybody else on this forum, I do not work for Linden Lab in any way, we're all jsut regular users here. But I am absolutely sure that they would have kept SL online if possible. The crash this time must have been so bad the servers simply can't function until it's been repaired.
