Linden Lab doesn't accept debit cards.  You can use a regular major credit card, or a verified PayPal or Skrill account as a payment method.  See these links for information about registering a payment method:

Responding to your edited question...

When you try to register a payment method, Linden Lab (like most companies) will make a $1.00 test transaction to your card to verify it.  This charge will be reversed, whether the card is accepted or not, but if you check your balance quickly, you may see the transaction.

My guess is that you tried to register a debit card, then tried to use it to purchase $L.  The test transaction did not go through, and your attempted $L purchase failed because the card was not accepted as your payment method.

If you do not have an actual credit card, you can use your debit card or a real life bank account to "verify" a PayPal or Skrill account.  You can then use the PayPal or Skrill account as your payment method with LL.  NOTE:  When doing this, you must be careful to keep enough money in the PayPal account to cover any Second Life fees or purchases.  Linden Lab demands instant payment, and will not wait several days for money to go from your bank, to PayPal, to them.

This happened to me when I tried to setup and use my Debit card, I received several failed attempts and each transaction reflected $1 pending in my checking account but never posted.  The good news is, now I am able to use said card for my purchases....perhaps it's because of the Visa Logo which allows it to be processed as credit or debit, in either case I have no more issues with it....Maybe there is a wait period from the time you add the card number before attempting purchases?
