Sure!  You may always abandon the Linden Home, and you may always rent a different parcel.  The two actions are independent of each other.  If you are plannin to live on the Mainland, though, it makes more sense to buy a new parcel than to rent it.  You will have to pay the purchase price for the parcel, of course, but your Premium land fee waiver will apply toward monthly fees on that new parcel, the same way that it applies to your Linden Home now.  If you rent (or if you buy land in a private estate), you will not be using the land fee waiver that you have already paid for.

Rolig is entirely correct.  However, I would differ with her in that buying mainland is not ALWAYS a better choice than renting the land from another resident or on a private estate.

You have to take several factors into account.

  • What is the up-front PURCHASE cost of the Mainland parcel you are looking at?  Too high a price can make renting look attractive, especially if you don't plan to be there for a long time.
  • What is the LOCATION of the parcel(s) you are looking at?  You might choose to rent land in a beautiful area rather than buy a parcel in an ugly, bombed out area.
  • What is the RENTAL PRICE compared to paying tier?  If you buy, you do get 512 m2 without having to pay any tier, and that is attractive...but maybe you are looking for a larger parcel.
  • What's your potential landlord like?  A good landlord or estate owner can be more accommodating and responsive than Linden Lab to griefing or service issues.  On the other hand, a BAD landlord can be simply unbearable.

To add to Lindal's list, a good landowner who does rentals can own and control a larger area than a small landowner can. A single out-of-place build can ruin a whole sim and if you only own a small parcel there, there is no knowing what will pop up on the neighbor plot tomorrow.
