Can one do some settings or something, so sl doesn't use almost or all of the internenet...?

but your question... SL is indeed a bit hungry for data, for sure when you'r not having a big bandwidth it can slow down everything else.

I'm not sure at the official viewer, but on Firestorm you can limit it a little bit (see remark by Sven under my post)

Go to menu / avatar / preferences / network& files / connection

there you see a slider where you can limit the data use for sl.

 

 

If possible think about getting a higher limit from your ISP.

Try a speedtest when logged in to SL, and when not logged in, to get an idea.

 

If you can tell us the viewer you are using, might be able to provide more specific help, so I won't spam you with links.

This slider is only affecting UDP packets and since SL uses HTTP most of the time, it won't change much!

Second Life does use a lot of bandwidth!  You might consider getting a separate internet account and service, to avoid annoying your roommates.

You could always use your phone as a wireless hot spot.

Or set your NIC to 10/half

Or upgrade your ISP
