I'm in the market for a new laptop....nothing fancy. I only use my laptop for shopping, Facebook, web searching and SL. I don't do any gaming or photography. However I know nothing about laptop specs....a whole different language. Can anyone advise what should I be looking for? I want something affordable but able to handle my generic needs. Thank you in advance.

that you don't need anythign fancy ánd want to play SL on it is a contradiction.

SL is one of the most demanding programs you can imagine for a laptop.

You will only get a good result if you go for a high end gaming machine with at least a good dedicated graphic chip.

Price wise far over a normal home laptop.

For example a MSI gaming laptop with med level dedicated graphics ...starts at 899 euro's

One person's affordable is another person's bankruptcy.

Be specific.  Give us a price range.

I just got a new lapt top for aroud US$ 800.00 with these specs and it runs SL at high settings very nicely.

CPU: Intel® Core i7-5500U CPU @ 2.40GHz (2396.52 MHz)
Memory: 8063 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit (Build 10586)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 950M/PCIe/SSE2

I don't know much about gaming. I only know you need some specific programs/hardware for it. But I guess now saying it out loud, it would make sense that SL would be considered gaming of sorts. With that being said I guess I should have ask what would be a good laptop in the range of $800.

So thank you Perrie....the specs you listed can be a start for my research. Like I said that is a whole different language for me.

Two things to watch for when shopping are if the Lap Top has Touch Screen and / or an Optical Drive (CD/DVD player/burner).  They both add to the price and I had no need for touch screen but I really did need the optical drive.

It had been several years since I bought my last lap top and was quite a surprise to find that most don't come with an optical drive now.  I could have always gotten an external one but preferred not to mess with it.

Oh good advice. I doubt I have the need for either. I recently bought an iPad...and I only use my laptop for SL and chatting online. Very generic. I'm on my iPhone or iPad. I know, why not get an apple laptop....because they are so pricey for what my needs are.
