This so-called market doesn't exist without a purpose. Take a half second to think about that.

Why is there your so-called market? Because people buy things to socialize and play with each other.

This is only about ideologies in the mind of one person here, and that person isn't me. And throwing out wild claims of socialism and furry conspiracies really doesn't strengthen one's argument.

Yeah, but two things:

First, for a very significant part of the population, the subject of socialization and play is the market itself: the ability to buy and sell t-shirts and land.

Second, the reason there's any place to socialize and play is that it makes money for Linden Lab.  They must monetize the virtual world somehow.  Where can they best extract rents from people wanting to socialize and play?  I think virtual land is an ingenious way to do that, for all sorts of reasons, not least of which is the fact that many people enjoy the land market as part of how they engage with other Second Life residents (see first point).

It's possible that this could all be flipped around.  "Land" -- 3D hosting space -- could be doled out on the basis of something other than direct payment, and the Lab could generate revenue some other way.  Perhaps user connection fees and/or subscriptions.  Or it could go with an "app store" approach and charge 233% commission on the Marketplace.  Personally, I think there's very little chance that anything else would be nearly as successful as the current overwhelmingly land-based revenue model.

Anyway, the only place where "ideology" necessarily comes into play is this part where Linden Lab exists as a for-profit company.  They are free to create any internal economic system, or none at all, as long as they make money for their investors.

"No more employee hours devoted to auctions" ??

What's to devote? Just automatically put abandoned land in the Auction queue after the previous-owner grace period.

That way the neighbours have a chance. It feels like the approach that would reguire the least coding. - That would be 'least' other than just handing it `to the bots of price-gouging dealers at L$1/m.
[snip]

This actually sounds like a reasonable method. I would add to it, by only having X parcels under auction in any one time, and if there was no bidders when the auction period ends? Then and only then, put it up for open sale for L$1/m, since there was no other interest.

Perhaps also, when the parcel is cleared out and the grace period is over, revert the land back to the original landscaping too. One thing I consider an eyesore with all of the unowned land, is the totally unnatural shapes they are. One parcel raised up flat, next to another parcel lowered down into a crater, next to another flat parcel at another level...

Make it look like empty land again. (and... how about automatically planting a random linden tree somewhere in the parcel too? ... too much?
:D

at the very least, see if the surrounding parcels are, in fact, the same parcel, meaning that it is completely surrounded. if so? then the parcel surrounding the abandoned one gets first dibs.

If more than one parcel, owned by the same person? then still open it up to the public.

I'm thinking specifically of all those pock-marked 4x4 squares that turn an otherwise usable parcel into a wasted space.

Fastest way to get rid of that 4x4 square? Get it sold to the owner of the parcel they're surrounded by.

What has happened to this program since the last post? I have looked for abandoned land set for sale and havent found any anywhere.

That was eventually disabled, since the automation was actually making the workload higher. It's still possible to buy the stuff, but depending on circumstances, LL may put it up for auction when you ask, rather than hand it over. Look over here for how it's done now.

And here is something unusual: an auction that's set for a $2.50 / sq.m. opening bid. It's large and it's waterfront, true, but rather unremarkable Jeogeot waterfront that doesn't border on a Linden water parcel or anything, and is weirdly shaped.

One thing about this location: I very vaguely recall that this may have been where Scope Cleaver's house used to be -- it was around here somewhere. (If you don't know who Scope Cleaver was, then never mind.)

I'm guessing this is just a mistake.

What's maybe interesting also is the adjacent abandoned parcel(s) on the SIM that could have been joined.

The waterfront in either direction is a long line of abandoned parcels with no protected water.  As far as sailing goes, you could find yourself boxed in

Gotta love that 512 of water for $30,000L on the SIM.

(I had to look cause I live on Jeogot)
