Question

I am a new premium member on SL.  I have not yet claimed the house that comes with my membership.  I would like to buy land and a house for it.  Can I then also claim the house that comes with my membership or am I limited to only a certain total of land and/or houses?

The amount of land you own in Second Life depends only on how much you are willing to pay for it!  The owner of the largest collection of Private Estate regions owns well over 400 regions.

But you are probably not planning to sink several hundred thousand dollars into virtual real estate.

In your case, you have two options.

  • You can take the free Linden Home, on a 512 sq. m. parcel.  OR
  • You can buy 512 sq. m. of land anywhere on the Mainland and build or buy a house to put on it.  Aside from the initial purchase price (which will vary, depending on the desirability of the land and the eagerness of the owner to sell), you will pay no monthly land tier fee.

If you choose the second option, you can buy more land than that "free" 512 sq. m, but you will pay a monthly fee for any land you own over that amount.  You can see the land fee schedule here: https://secondlife.com/my/account/landfees.php?lang=en-US

For example, let's say you want to buy as much land as you can, without paying more than $15 USD per month for it.  The tier table says you can have up to 2048 sq. m...but add your free 512 to that, and you find that you can own 2560 sq. m for $15 per month.

The land does not have to be all in one piece, you can have a home in the mountains and another one at the beach.  What matters is the TOTAL amount of Mainland you own.

You can also take the free Linden Home, AND buy more Mainland for a second house.  In this case, the Linden Home counts as your free 512 sq. m. and you will pay tier on any additional land you buy.

I teach a class on Second Life land on Fridays at 5 pm SL Time, at Caledon Oxbridge University.  It's free to attend, and I recommend it before spending your money!

Hiya MM,

Premium membership comes with a tier allowance of 512m2. You may apply that allowance towards any amount of land you want, but you'll have to pay additional tier (rent) for anything beyond that initial 512m2. If you choose a Linden Home, your 512m2 allowance will take care of the land under the home and the home as well. The home will not count against the standard Land Impact allowance of 117LI per 512m2 of land. That's a bonus.

You cannot select a particular Linden Home, you pick one of the themed areas and are given a house at random. You may flip houses up to five times in any 24 hour period. If you choose not to take a Linden Home, you can purchase (for a one time fee) a plot of mainland. You can purchase virtually any amount of mainland you want, but anything above 512m2 will incur extra tier (rental) fees, as I already described.

If you don't want mainland, there are numerous private estates with areas for rent. Your 512m2 land allowance will NOT apply there.

Here's more for you to read...

Good luck!
