sounds to me like you have ports blocked. Perhaps not on your own firewall but your vpn.

 try a direct connection with your firewall up to check if it's the vpn

You are not telling us enough for us to give good answers. Start by opening the viewer, do not log in, open HELP->ABOUT... and copy paste that information with your tech questions.

You are likely having a connection issue because of something in your Internet pipeline. While you may have a good Internet connection, there is somethng wrong with your connection to the SL servers.

Mac's have had some DNS issues in the past. The linked information explains how to handle that.

If all that checks out, then the problem is in your VPN. The admin for the VPN may have some ports blocked. In may ways the VPN can work as a firewall. In general a VPN encrypts the stuff leaving your computer. A partner to the VPN at the other end decrypts the information. SL is NOT a partner. So, the VPN has to realize that and send and receive all this info to and from SL outside the VPN encrypted pipe.

While the VPN may have worked for 3 months, the admin may have changed something or the software updated or... something. Often an admin will detect the abnormally high data flow caused by SL and think something is wrong and block the ports to reduce traffic.
