You mentioned skins.  Most Mesh bodies have a default skin, and you can color it using a colorf picker tool.  But to really get a good match with your favorite skin (which is what you're looking at on your head) you need an "applier".  Most major skin makers now sell appliers that will paint their skins onto popular mesh bodies.

I and most of my friends use the Maitreya "Lara" mesh body, but you really should check out meshbodyaddicts.com and read their reviews of the many choices out there!
