A group out there you can join but apparently can't turn off notices

That sounds like the goup from hell, so leave it.  If it's a standard SL group, all you have to do is open your group list (right click on yourself and select My Groups) then right click on the group name and select Leave.  If it's one of those Subscribe-O-Matic groups, you'll have to go back to the kiosk that you clicked to join, and then click it again to leave.
