I cannot make changes to my avatar, skin, body etc. What's wrong?

You're probably doing nothing wrong at all, but I suspect that you have chosen a mesh avatar, which will take some getting used to.  A mesh avatar is worn like a shell over the body you are used to, so all of the familiar tools that you have used for modifying shape and skin in the past will have no effect on it.  Those tools only modify your "real" avatar, hidden inside and probably transparent.  All of this is hard toi explain and is more than a little confusing.  I suggest sticking with a "classic" (non-mesh) avatar until you figure it all out.
