why am i unable to take my clothes off?

I'm going to guess you are wearing one of the starter avs that come with modesty underwear painted on their bodies. Those avs are designed to keep newbies from being shocked by the sight of their naked bodies.  The solution is to try a different avatar, or at least a different skin, if that's an option.  You'll find a range of choices in your avatar picker or in the Library >>> Clothing >>> Initial Outfits folder in your inventory, or you can go shopping in world.

If you're wearing one of the starter avatars, it's probable that the avatar skin has baked on undies. Switch through other avatars in your inventory's library folder until you find one with a fully naked skin.

I'm assuming you are a male avatar, from your username.  Once you get your clothes off, you will find that a fairly important part is missing.  Linden Lab forgot to make anatomically correct male avatars.

You can find freebie genitals in a number of locations.  Just two words of advice:

1.  Don't wear one with an erection on a nude beach.  Save that for the privacy of the bedroom.

2.  Even if your attachment comes scripted with a way to make it invisible, don't wear it at all except in appropriate circumstances.  People can see you are wearing it by enabling view transparent textures, CTRL+ALT+T, and many people consider it extremely rude to do so except in areas like sex clubs or nude beaches.
