why do I freeze and or crash on SL viewer

Your computer may be overheating.  Get a free app like CPU-Z (and GPU-Z for graphics cards) that can monitor your temperatures and performance.  If it shows you are overheating and the computer is throttling down to cool off, open your computer up and thoroughly blow out all the dust with a can of compressed air.  Check to see that all cooling fans are running.
