Welcome to Second Life. It's nowhere near as simple as you seem to think it is. You can't just drop a random texture on any object -- and certainly not a mesh avatar -- and expect it to look right. A texture has to be drawn to match the UV map that the creator of the object made for it. If you have UV maps for various mesh parts of your avatar, you can create textures to apply. If not, you're stuck.
I'd suggest reading a few basic articles in the Knowledge Base to get some background.
