Second Life isn't an app or a game, it's a virtual world. You'll need a lot of rendering power, far above the capabilities of an iPad, to be able to see a full 3D environment full of other peoples' content.

You can get a very very limited experience on smaller devices, but it's not a good way to enjoy Second Life as a newcomer. You'll want a full PC or laptop with a dedicated graphics card - as if you were playing Modern Warfare or any other high end AAA+ game (Second Life will push your PC harder than these games, but it's a good basis for some new perspective).
