There are a lot f things to consider.  The first step is to make sure you can use the microphone in other programs besides SL.  Does it work for Skype or maybe Windows' Ease of Access?

Once it is working outside of Second Life, then we can start troubleshooting what may be wrong in world.

It looks like I didn't read your other post before this one.  If the microphone is working for other programs, then we have a few setting to check in SL.

Configuring device settings

Your device settings determine the microphone and speakers that Second Life uses. To configure  your device settings:

  1. Choose Me Preferences.
  2. Click the Sound & Media tab.
  3. Click the Input/Output devices button.
  4. Click the Input dropdown to select a device for your microphone
  5. Click the Output dropdown to select a device for your speakers.

In some cases, you may need to exit and restart the Second Life Viewer.

MAKE SURE the microphone you pick in step 4 is the same device you use in other programs.

Voice has been a flaky service for almost 9 years, even on a good day. There are voice-related settings in your viewer, and there are user settings and controls in your own computer and microphone, any of which may be misadjusted or conflicting with other settings. Take a very good look at the exhaustive suggestions provided by the Firestorm support staff at http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_voice . When you are testing voice, visit Voice Echo Canyon , where you will be able to hear your own voice as you test.
