how do I maintain my sl avi and downgrade my account to a non paying one?

go to your accountpage and downgrade to basic, all will keep as it is except you will have not the ability to own mainland, and your stipend will stop.( unless you have a very old account )

If you OWN land, you need to sell or abandon it.  This is for mainland only. 

 

After that, just change your account to basic like Alwin said.  And that's it.  I have gone up to 4 years without a log on before.  Everything is still in inventory (even if it was all outdated and needed replacing) and the account is still active.
