Adding units to custom characterization

There are never any Lindens in this resident-to-resident Answers site.  We are all SL residents like you.  If you want to suggest a system change of some kind, you can submit a JIRA report to do that.  As far as dimensions are concerned, however, all measurements in SL are already metric.  If you are refering to the sliders in Appearance, though, those are proportional to the full scale of your own avatar, which means that the exact metric dimensions will be different for each person.

Unfortunately, the Appearance sliders will probably always be dimensionless numbers.

Fortunately, you can work around that.  Simply rez a prim, and make it the dimension you want a part of you to be.  Prims ARE measured in metric units.  Then enter Appearance mode and edit the prim "measuring stick" to be next to the part of you you are trying to dimension.  

Use the Appearance sliders to change your shape until you match the measurement.
