If you have turned 18 since you joined SL, it may take Linden Lab a while to recognize that your status has changed.  Linden Lab does not usually "verify" your age unless some special event calls it to their attention, so you should probably call it to their attention by submitting a support case (use the category Account Issue).  They may then ask you to submit a photocopy of some document to prove your age, but that's OK. Then you and the Lab will both know that you really are 18 and you'll be able to change that Preference setting.
