why do I get the message: cannot create requested directory?

Need a bit more info. How did you try to reduce the number of items in your inventory? The correct way would be to right click on the item or folder then delete. That will send the item to your trash folder. You can't delete system folders, btw. The system folders have a little icon of sorts on the folder; ones like Trash, Textures, Animations, Firestorm( if you're using that viewer), Body Parts, Calling Cards, Clothing,etc. Then right click on your trash folder and empty the trash.
