"Blank hair" is usually refered to as a "bald cap". It's extremely useful as a way to hide the normal system hair --- sometimes called "helmet hair" -- that you would see otherwise. These days, most of us wear prim or mesh hair, so a bald cap has become less necessary than it once was. However, you may still find that some short hairdos require a bald cap, particularly those that do not come with an alpha layer. It's a good idea to keep a couple of bald caps around for those times.
