the door will only respond to touching, or some, also to a chat command or detect you walk to it, you will have to find out in the manual. If it responds to chat or detect you, you could rezz a phantom curtain in front of it.

if the door is mod, you can change the texture, or side, of the door. Or even add a new script that does respond to chat or detection.

Sean's solution is the easiest one, as long as you have mod perms for the door.  Just modify it by making the glass less than fully transparent, or by applying a curtain texture to it.  As you have discovered, the problem with addding an extra prim to the door is that the door's script has to know to rotate that prim as well as the rest of the door.  Unless it was written for that specific purpose, the script will simply ignore your extra prim, leaving it right where you can walk into it and bloody your nose.  If you're an adept scripter and have mod perms, you could certainly write your own door script to replace what's there now.  It's just easier to tint the glass instead.
