Start with the Quick Start guide (first link). That gives instructions for downloading and launching the viewer Alwin pointed you to. Notice the "Knowledgebase" tab at the top of this window. You'll find lots of things to read there.

OK, so Alwin and Maddy told you how to get in world. Meeting people takes another skill set.

The first task is to find them.  You could wander around randomly in SL, but you'll find a lot of empty space if you do that, just as you would in RL.  Go to places where people are likely to be.  You can open your Destination Guide and look for popular spots, or you can open the Events tab your Search window and look for live music, sports, or other things that are going on today.  Or you could go shopping.  Shopping is always fun and there's often a crowd looking for the latest clothing or hair style.  You might also use the Groups tab in Search to find a group that might share your interests in Egyptian pottery or a role play group that has its own Starship.

If you keep your Mini-Map on screen, you'll be able to locate people on the same region by their green or yellow dots.  Walk up and start a conversation.  If you're shy, scan through their profiles first (Right click on them and select Profile) to see if you might have something in common. Remember to fill in your own profile so they can find out who you are too.  "Hi!" is a pretty dull opener, but most people will open up if you compliment a nice skirt or admire a flashy car.  And if they don't?   SL is a big place with thousands of other people.
