Rich text editor - strikethrough not working.

Recommended Posts

It seems the strike through button on the rich text editor toolbar is generating html that is not allowed.

One workaround is to enter HTML mode and put <span style='text-decoration: line-through;'></span> around the text. Like this!

The strikethrough button creates HTML like this:

<s>text</s>

which is the tag for strikethrough.  See

Did you encounter some issue with this?

I get the same message Keli gets, although in my case the invalid HTML is removed. This is on a MacBook Pro. Latest version of the OS, and latest version of Safari.

That's why I started to look at inline css as a workaround.

strikethrough done by hitting the button first, then typing.

strikethrough done by typing the text, highlighting then hitting the button.

HTML generated by above:

<p><s>strikethrough</s> done by hitting the button first, then typing.</p>

OK, I belive the problem here is that you are manually inserting the <s> tag instead of using <strike>, which is what the toolbar inserts.

Here is the list of tags you are allowed to use when you have "Resident" role or higher.  See Community Help for list ranks and roles.

@Keli. Strange that we are both on Mac/Safari but have different results when using strikethrough. At this moment, I'm on a Vista PC, using Safari, and the result is.... Strikethrough is not working... I get the same error message, and the tags are removed

@Rand. Personally, I'm using the strikethrough button, but getting error messages. The button seems to insert <s> into the code and not <strike>. Is the button supposed to generate a <strike> tag?

One time I got the same message with a list I copied from the wiki and pasted into a comment I made. I didn't think much of it at the time, thinking perhaps it contained some other invalid html. There could be - as you mentioned Irene Muni had reported in a comment I can no longer see..... - issues with other tags too.

Hi Rand and all, this is a problem with TinyMCE and not limited to this forum. The latest version of TinyMCE has a fix for the problem. On the TinyMCE versions that have the trouble, <strike> is generated on Mozilla and older Safari, but Chrome and recent Safari versions (mostly 5.x, looks like the last 1 or 2 updates to Safari 4 do it too) generate <s>.

For reference here is the Atlassian JIRA bug addressing the problem, and a blog post about the same problem happening with TinyMCE on Wordpress.

Agreed! But since that's not likely to happen, we should at least be able to give Kudos for the info. Why is not kudos activated for the Community feedback forum?
