Yes, you can.  If you are sending a gift from Marketplace, follow these instructions >>> https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Shopping-in-the-Second-Life-Marketplace/ta-p/700189#Section_.1.3.2 .  If you are planning to give a gift that is already in your own inventory, it must have transfer permissions.  If it does, you can drag the item from inventory into an IM to the other person or simply drag and drop the item directly on the person.

...and this is likely something you already know, but with most merchants, if you want to gift something instead of buy it for yourself (especially with those no transfer items), right click on the item and a menu that offers 'gift' should come up.
