how do i change to adult status?

If you are at least 18 years old in RL, all you have to do is check the General, Moderate, Adult option on the General page in Preferences.  If you also want to be able to see Adult items in Marketplace, use the dropdown menu at the top/center of the page in Marketplace.  Finally, if you want to see Adult selections in Search, check th appropriate box in the upper left corner of the Search window.

Incidentally, you may still not be able to get into most Adult areas in Second Life, since you were just born today.  Most owners of Adult regions routinely block anyone less than a month old from entering.  It's nothing personal, just good business.  The most annoying griefers in SL usually either get bored or banned in their first 30 days, so blocking them saves landowners a lot of trouble.  Wait a month.  You'll be able to visit then.
