If you don't have the nVidia, you might want to check your graphic settings and try adjusting some of the settings.  I am running el capitan on my macbook and haven't had any issues with it.

Generally, when I have had a crash (which doesn't happen very often) it's been when I've upped all the graphic settings or I've been in a very full sim or a sim with heavy graphic effects.

It's possible that it may also be a connection issue.

The problem isn't SL or the Firestorm viewer, it's an Apple thing that started for me with El capitan.  Many mac users are complaining they get kernel panic crashes just from scrolling through their email.  Most say it started when they downloaded El Capitan.  I just removed Firestorm and Singularity from my mid 2010 macbook pro and the first thing it did was kernel panic crash in email.  Hoping Apple fixes this in it's next update but not banking on it.
