can i change my avitar's sex?  will the game recognize my avitar as being the new sex?

Not only can you change your avatars sex, you can also change the species. SL does not really know the concept of gender, so it is entirely up to you what sex you want to be.

All you have to do is change your shape, and probably skin, and you have changed. If you choose to create your own shape, it will by default be a female one that you can change do a male one.

Your "avitar's" gender is only determined by the shape, skin, hair, clothing you choose to wear. So yes you can be anything you want, just make sure to use a female Display Name for female and a male Display name for male.

Yes, in edit appearance you can click the setting for male of female avatar or you can just use a male shape from the Library & adjust the shape settings after that to get the shape you want.

Yes, you can.  You can do anything in SL; your world your imagination.

Your inventory should contain all the necessary components (except male genitalia.)

Put on a male/female shape and adjust the measurements to your desire.

To add to Storm's reply, open your inventory, click Create > New Body Parts > Shape.  The shape will go into your inventory where you can rename it 'female shape' or 'male shape' or whatever.  Then, wear that shape,  right click yourself to open up a pie and select 'Edit Appearance'. Once you have the Appearance window open, click the button on the bottom left that indicates if the shape is to be male or female.  Depending on the gender that you check, the photos in the windows will switch accordingly.  Use the sliders to create the shape and save (you can rename the shape name during the save process if you wish to change it).  Good luck and have fun!
