If you have good skills as a creator (designer, animator, scripter ..) or a performer ( musician, DJ ... ) and know enough about SL's economic, social, and building environment to provide products or services that people are willing to pay you for, you can earn modest amounts of money.  It's a competitive world, though, so be patient.  You can almost certainly earn a lot more in RL with those same skills, so those of us who create in SL mostly do it because we really like being creative.

If you don't have a marketable skill like that, you can pick up pocket change and have fun by playing games like PaleoQuest or Linden Realms, or by entering contests in clubs.  Maddy has also given you links to a couple of places where you can read about unskilled jobs, and you can consult the Wanted forum here. 

Mostly, though, the best way to get L$ is to buy them.  Save your coffee money a couple of days a week, buy L$ with it on the Linden Exchange, and you will be able to live like a queen here.  AND you won't have to spend your in-world time working either.
