Can I run 2nd life without video card?

Question

  • 0

The quality of the video card is one of the most crucial details of your computer specs. The video card will make or break a computer for SL. A few months ago I tried to purchase a new laptop. I asked the salesperson about the video card and he wasn't sure which it had but took a guess. He was wrong. Most of the specs on the computer were great for SL but the substandard video card made the computer useless for SL. I took the computer back and ordered online where I knew what I was getting. Most of the time, if the videocard isn't adequate, SL will not even load. If it is barely within specs, the world around you looks like nothing but cardboard cutouts.

I assume you mean without an adequate video card

Yes there are second life clients that are built without the graphics.. One is called Metabolt.

Most people use this viewer when they do not have the graphics card to support the main viewer or, for an office work environment

You can find Many other options to download on the Second Life wiki @

Yes, but you won't see anything.  If you're running a bot program on a server that might not be too bad.  You can lose the monitor as well (since you can't display anything on it anyway), keyboard, mouse and soundcard.  Depending on your bot you may be able to get rid of the hard-drive too.  So you really only need a server motherboard, CPUs and supporting electronics and a network/modem card.  Then you can spend all the rest of your money on memory - or just take it to the pub.

Everyone else pretty much covered it well but I would like to add that a video card that would be adaquate (perhaps not the absolute best) for SL can be had fairly reasonably most places.  It does not take a top of the line card to be able to enjoy SL.  Even a cheap one will be of some use.
