If I wanted a username that was abandoned for over 110+ days can I still get it from someone else?

Usernames are unique and are not recycled and certainly never will be now as Second Life has moved on to single usernames and display names apart from a few remaining third party sites where first & second names are still available.

As far as I am aware, you cannot buy someone else's username even if you could contact the person. Accounts are based on real life credentials when set up and Linden Lab will not transfer them.

Display names seem to be the way forward for you. No, they are not unique but at least you can choose exactly what you want.

There's not much more to be said about this. Unless LL changes their way of handling accounts that are not used, you have to find a new, unique name to use as account name, or use display names.

Nyll is absolutely correct & I would just add that it is against the TOS to give an account to someone else.

3.1 You must establish an account to use Second Life, using true and accurate registration information.

You must establish an Account with Linden Lab to use the Service, except for those portions of the Websites which Linden Lab allows users to access without registration. You may establish one or more additional Accounts, provided that your existing Account is in good standing and you are otherwise in full compliance with this Agreement. You may not transfer or assign your Account and its contractual rights, licenses and obligations, to any third party without the prior written consent of Linden Lab.

The short answer is no, you can't.

To elaborate, SL usernames are unique identifiers and can't be transferred or re-used.  You cannot "legally" buy or sell a username.  if you do, don't tell anyone about it because if LL finds out, the banhammer will fall...
