When you ask a tech question... give us the details on your viewer and computer. The easy way to do that is launch the viewer. Before login, click HELP->ABOUT... copy and paste that info into your post. You can do that using OPTIONS in the upper right of your post.

Otherwise, on Windows (from XP to 10) click Start and type DXDIAG, case doesn't matter. That will open the dxdiag in a panel. It will give you your system specs. We need to know: video driver version, OpenGL version, …

Check that your computer meets the System Requirements | Second Life.

If you have a laptop, make sure it is set to use Performance settings with the SL viewer and NOT the power save mode. Many laptops will try to run SL in power saving mode and you'll get the error you are seeing.
