Use Blender >>> https://www.blender.org/download/  AFAIK, it's the only free 3D software out there and there are a ton of tutorials on line.  Coincidentally, it's the one that most modelers in SL use too, so if you ask questions about it in the Mesh forum you'll be likely to get good answers.

this struggle is going on since may 30th ... perhaps a very young unexperienced member, but not very active in looking for solutions herself.
