Uh-oh.  I know the sinking feeling and the "Oh, my! I wish I had made backup files" regret. That's all in your own computer.  All the viewer does is dump chat logs there.  It doesn't manage them.  If they are suddenly gone, you'll have to find a way to use file recovery routines in your machine to bring them back. 

Cautionary advice:  I never check the box in Preferences that allows the viewer to update automatically.  I always update manually.  There are many reasons for making that choice, but my big one is that I want to be sure that I start without any of the small errors that can accumulate in hidden files.  Unless you take steps to archive the logs before you do a manual update, however, those files are wiped clean with the new installation.  (See step one at http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_update_viewer )
