Wearing my skin

Hi! I took a long break from second life.... 6 years to be exact, I've made a new account and now I'm having problems with changing my appearance. I've forgotten about a lot of things and there have been so many changes.
So, I've purchased shapes and skins and changing shape has worked out just fine but I can't get the avatar to change skins.... And I'm just a little lost.... I've tried reading blog posts but it's all so theoretical! Man, I thought I knew what I was doing... Can anyone help me, please?

You are probably using one of the new mesh starter avatars. Only solution is to wear one of the older starteravatars and start from there (they can be found in your inventory in the libary folder, if I remember it correctly).
