HOW DO I GO ABOUT MAKING UP AN AVITAR

For the forums go to SWENDELL, next to Welcome at the top of this page, then click on View Images for Swendell over there to the right. Now you upload a picture from your computer. Once you have that, go to My Settings at the top of the page, choose the Avatars Tab, click on From Uploaded Images and click an image to select it as your Avatar.

If you have a  SL  avatar  supplied when you  joined  you  need to go to the market place and  you can get a  new skin and  shape depending  on  what you want to be in SL..   http://secondlife.com/shop/?lang=en   of course  you can always   go to search and  find many  stores there  that sell or  have skins and  shapes for  free.

What do you mean, an avatar for Second Life or one for the Forums? Avatars for Second Life you can buy or make yourself. You can right-click on your avatar and choose Edit Shape. Most people are never done editing their avatar o it's OK if you don't get it right the first time. Avatars for the Forums you can make in My Settings (top right of page), then Avatars and Social Connect.
