The latest version of the viewer will not run on Mac 10.6.
Linden Lab announced that Mac 10.6 was now deprecated - please see https://community.secondlife.com/t5/Tools-and-Technology/Tools-Update-Viewer-Released/ba-p/2926929

You will need to either update your operating system to at least Mac 10.7 or use an older version of the viewer.
Please see https://secondlife.com/my/support/system-requirements/index.php? for the system requirements to run Second Life.
You really should update your operating system if possible, rather then staying on an outdated viewer version.

You can find a list of old viewer versions here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes

If you choose to stay on an old viewer version rather then updating your operating system, this viewer version is the latest that should work for you: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Release/3.7.27.300636

You will need to block the automatic updates.
Go to Me -> Preferences -> Setup
Set Software Updates to "Download and install updates manually" and untick "Willing to update to release candidates".
This will only work for a short time. You will eventually need to change the viewer channel to totally block the forced updates. I'm afraid I don't know how to do this on a Mac but another Mac user should be able to tell you.

ETA: It looks like this is what you will need to do http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Viewer_parameters#Mac_OS_X_AppleScripts

You need to use the --channel <name> parameter.

Firestorm 4.6.9 and the next 4.7.1 release will work on Mac 10.6 but later releases will not.

Once the Tools update has been merged into Firestorm, Windows XP and Mac 10.6 will be deprecated.

Any TPV which has already merged in the Tools update changes will not work.
