Hi Folks,

I am looking for some people to do some beta testing of my new Windows software product called Virtual Flycam.

vFly.png

Virtual Flycam turns the numeric key pad on your keyboard into a joystick like control mapped to the Flycam settings in your viewer. This enables you to “fly” your camera around in nice smooth movements. You can go side to side, up and down, forward and backward, you can turn, tilt and roll and you can do them all at the same time or in any combination. Take your hand off the keyboard and it will keep going.

NumericKeypad8bit.png

The web page tells you how to set it up and there is also a help file included with the same information.

The viewer Flycam settings only recognise one device of this type, there is no option to choose between. If you already have a joystick/game pad/space navigator or the like installed you will have to disable the driver. This takes two seconds. Just type Device Manager into search, select Device Manager from the list, right click on your device and select Disable. You can enable it again just as quickly.

Supported Windows versions are XP/Vista/Windows 7/Windows 8 and 8.1
Works with any viewer that supports Flycam, which all of the main ones do.

You can send me feedback or ask questions either by replying to this post or use the feedback page on the web site or IM me in world.

This is the download page.

There are no viruses, malware or any other bad things in this software. This won’t stop your browser from giving you a warning. It just means that it doesn’t recognize the software and is alerting you to take care. Which, of course you should do. Go ahead and scan the file with your anti virus.

The program crashes on launch on my Windows 7 system.

Dxdiag of system: http://pastebin.com/n00yYLti

Install appeared to complete without errors - installer logs show everything was fine.

When launching Virtual Flycam, VirtualFlycam.exe appears for a few seconds in task manager and then crashes with a null reference exception.

That sounds like a cue for some tips, so here goes:

1. Try tapping instead f holding down the keys, You can get a more predictable control of the camera this way. Notice on the Virtual Flycam (VF) interface how much the value changes for the axis. One tap may not change it at all (depending on your settings), in which case try a short series of fast taps.

2. Fine tune your settings. This only takes a couple of minutes. Open the Joystick configuration window and them put the VF interface next to it so you  can watch what it does. Starting with the X axis, which is Left / Right use the 4 and 6 keys to take it to the extremes -10 to +10 in VF. Adjust the settings in the Flycam column on the configuration window until the camera movement feels natural, not to fast and not to slow.

Type in the new value and press enter and the change will take effect.

You may find the best settings for you change from viewer to viewer.

You may be surprised ho much the setting for one axis needs to be different to another to get the camera movement just the way you like it. Again try holding down the key vs tapping.

Quickly set the rest of the axis in the same way. Remember that you won't be able to roll if you have Auto Level selected.

3. Use the reset buttons:

Imagine that you are steering your way down a path. Ahead of you is a tree, you have to do a hard right to miss it. You jam your finger down on the 6 key. But now you are speeding off to the right and you are going to go off the path and into someone's house. What to do?!?!?!?

You can jam your finger down on the 4 key to go left but if you tap Alt + 4 you will jump back to middle 0 instantly. Continue to press 4 to turn to the left. Virtual Flycam has built in smoothing so the camera won't jump but it will turn much more quickly.

If you are going in several directions at once it can get complex and you may become confused about which key to press to go in the direction you want. Tap Alt + 5 to reset all and then one other key. The reset will be smooth so you can go from several directions at once to one direction maintaining fluid motion.
