contacting support does not work

Recommended Posts

Well I know they are getting swamped by with this particular issue - [i'm assuming your previous post on the 17th regarding DNS errors is the issue making you crazy today]

I can't imagine this being an internal error/issue in the Viewer code this time around.

Out of curiosity, that did they [LL Support] tell you this time regarding your query into this error condition?

I have not even been able to leave a message for support.  but I have read answers to my problem and tried them and they didn't work.

Oh Ouch! I understand. Just to be thorough, did you run all the tests to make sure that your PC wasn't directly being hijacked by any known DNS  redirector?

The reason I ask is because I read on Monday about a lot of ISPs that are effectively "Poisoning" the DSN functions of their customers as a matter of policy and this can have a detrimental effect on your ability to get proper DNS resolution for your SL software.

Of course this is where the recommendation to hard program your DNS Servers resolution of choice to external services like the Google Public DNS Servers [8.8.8.8 - 8.8.4.4] for each IP protocol.

If DNS Poisoning (ISP originated or just by someone who has a grudge against LL) is the cause, then could it be confirmed, and worked around, by entering the numerical IP address of a Second Life server?

[it's funny, I have this peculiar sense of deja vu reading your post, Karen; it would be awful if posting across multiple forums were to be encouraged, particularly if it affected the sanctity of a General Discussions forum . . . ]

I wish it was that easy. Linden Lab leases out a large number of servers from reliable Server Farm providers to service our need for 3D - The actual external IP addresses of individual Region Servers and the supporting asset servers is changing all the time. So the 1st layer of DNS resolution has to work which points the SL Session to the proper in-house routing devices.

This is an excellent educational blog on this topic in not too much tech-speak:

http://www.ckollars.org/dns-intercepting.html

and you can test to see if your DNS requests are in fact being intercepted by your ISP using the information in this blog:

https://www.dnsleaktest.com/what-is-transparent-dns-proxy.html & https://www.dnsleaktest.com/

My own test results show what I expected. I'm using Google's Public DNS Servers and AT&T is not intercepting my DNS requests.

I'd love to see the results of Berlin's use of this leak test. It would at least either 1) Let his ISP off the hook and/or 2) place this issue back in Linden Lab's lap to fix.

[Oh I'm all for the thourghal dissection and discussion of this topic here in GD :)

KarenMichelle,

thanks for your help.

My test result is pretty identical to yours, says none and Google.  Now what ?

How about throwing the damn computer away and reading a book, or taking a walk. Maybe head down to the pub. Go to the theatre, a museum, enroll in a tantric meditation class or something. Lots to do out there.

Tsk.

Somewhat short-tempered aren't you.

My suggestions were quite valid  and evidently just what the doctor ordered. You need to take a step back and get some perspective. Emotion clouds your judgement which would allow you to competently handle the difficulties you are having.

Perhaps posting your questions in the proper section would be a good first step.

Your suggestions are crap!  Never have I been able to walk down a street, read a book, go to a pub, to a theater or museum and be able to find the huge amount of pornographic material that I'm able to find on the web with my computer.  The only way that my emotions would cloud my judgement is if they were firmly embedding in my testicles... which they aren't.

Perhaps the OTHER one you posted in about your problem. You do realise that cross-posting is at the very least frowned upon, and potentially actionable by LL as spam, which might get you banned, which would solve your problems at a stroke.

how on earth can it be that SL doesn't have working support ?

They are a consumer computing company; why should they be the only one that wants to spend money keeping their customers happy when they have absolutely no need to - and you signed up to a ToS that makes that absolutely clear.

I"ve been frowned upon before, it has no effect on me.

So, by omission, presumably you ARE affected by the more serious consequence of your posts being potentially actionable by LL as spam, which might get you banned, which would solve your problems at a stroke.

Or are you, as is my wife, selective in what you focus your rose tinted spectacles on: she keeps asking "What's the worst that could happen?" when I criticise her driving, and gets upset when I point out that she could die, and kill our kids, and wipe out another car, and a bunch of pedestrians . . .
