Ouch Val, your packet loss may be the cause of your "super slow" complaint. Something's wrong there!

I'm not sure a new 21.5" iMac is going to be significantly faster than your old one. Your existing graphics card scores 1037 here...

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php

The GPU in a current generation iMac (750m) scores 1406. You do pick up an additional 512MB of video memory, so you'll probably see a bigger improvement than the benchmarks indicate. You don't get a significantly faster GPU until you go to the high end 27" machine.

Similarly, the i5 in your current iMac scores 3100/8200on the Geekbench test. The current i5 scores 3363/10000.

That's not a lot of progress in four years, and a new generation of iMacs should be coming now that Intel's newest generation of processors is finally shipping. If you can wait, I'd wait. And while I'm waiting, I'd try to figure out what's eating those packets.

All iMacs produced since 2010 support OpenGL 4.1.

All iMacs produced since 2007 support OpenGL 3.3.

Are you confusing Apple's support of OpenGL on Macs with LL's use of OpenGL on Macs?

I am not confusing anything, I am referring to the specs the op gave in the initial post.

I am  including these here again, in case you forgot to scroll up to the first posting in this thread:

I don't think even the most dedicated Apple fanboy/girl would think that Apple had the ability to go three years into the future to build a computer with a processor that wasn't introduced until after 2010.

For whatever reason, the way SL viewers are built means that Macs report their OpenGL version as 2.1 regardless of the theoretical support of the hardware/OS.

There is an other alternative as it comes to viewers. 'They' say this developer is Mac-orientated. I'm using it for a couple of months now and so far I'm satisfied (I like the graphics). It is on the 3rd party viewer list and you can find it here:

Oooh! Thank you Six! I'll give it a try and post feedback here. :)

Six, I owe you Kudos! I've been playing with Alchemy for two hours or so and I am very pleasantly surprised. Nice UI (I especially love the toolbar buttons for windlights and statistics), the viewer runs smoothly in high settings (not so much if I enable shadows, but well.. I don't need them much other than for taking snapshots) and the graphics rendering is lovely. Not to mention quite a bunch of very nice windlights.

Thank you very much for sharing this here! :)

I'm glad to hear Valerie, I just think the Kudo's should go to the developer of this viewer :smileyvery-happy:

And to be honest, I can't recall where and when, I stumbled on to this viewer somewhere on the forums myself a while ago :smileylol:

  • 1 year later...

I've just ordered a new 27" imac BUT I'm worried.

I recently purchased a new graphics card for my old Mac Pro to help me get high res graphics and rendering in SL, but since installing the new AMD Radeon R9 270x 2048 MB I've been having problems In SL and on my mac, so may be sending it back.

I've noticed that my brand new Imac is coming with a AMD Radeon R9 M390 with 2GB video memory, so now I'm concerned that I might experience the same issues because it's also an AMD Radeon.

Can anyone advise?

I periodically must switch viewers for this reason. Firestorm broke for me after a couple of years so I switched to Imprudence until it caused problems, so I went back to Firestorm for a couple of years until it broke again, then I used Singularity for a couple of years until it broke, then I switched back to FS, which is fine so far.
