You don't need a house, this isn't The Sims. Most SL users are 'homeless' - houses are just places to keep things rezzed - places to make their own. Some people don't live in houses, so we in Second LIfe just refer to it as 'Buying Land'.

(You don't need a job either, but that's up to you)

All land costs money, whether that's US$ (via Premium Membership) or L$ (via renting).

Hello Faith,

Just like in real life, there is no such thing as "free" housing in Second Life, unless a friend of yours allows you to set your home at his place.

Lots of people here don't even have a house. They just hang on with communities and friends, explore SL and have fun.

If you want a place of your own, you will have to put some real money to rent a spot, either from a private estate owner (which does not require a premium account) or directly from Linden Lab: the lattest DOES require a premium membership which entitles you to have a Linden Home, among other benefits.

Unless you have excellent skills (such as creating stuff, DJing, building, etc), it will be hard to make enough money to pay a rent, as most SL jobs do not pay well to say the least). Yet, it is possible to find cheap rentals for a small parcel.
