I have never used voice in SL.  Only typed chat.  There are lots of people like you and me who have personal reasons for preferring typed conversations (including being in a RL environment that is not private or where voice conversations would disturb others nearby). We get to be very good typists (or -- like me -- simply ignore our thousands of typos.)

There is no tool in SL that a resident can use to convert typed chat into voice, but there are several programs on the market outside of SL.  They are commonly used by people who are sight-impaired, and can't read typed messages easily. There are also programs that will convert voice into typed messages.  These are less reliable usually because they are eaily confused by variations in people's accents or speaking styles.  I suggest doing a good search on the Internet for moire kinds of programs.  Don't expect them to be cheap.

Natale reviews such a product in her blog:

If it is still available, its expensive but it does the job.

IDOBATA Pro is it's name and it is available in-world to purchase: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Freedom%20City/230/49/24
