(continued from the old forum)

The best bit about second life to me is the possibility to do what I've always wanted to do but never could; travel back in time.
But as someone who is obsessed with history, I am not looking for romantic, fantasy versions of the past.
I want to feel like I am really there, the real past, the gritty not always pretty past.
I understand that many others prefer the nice lovely version of history, but its not for me.

So let us use this topic to share LM's, descriptions and names of Historical sims.
There was a list on the old forum but I can no longer find it. :(
And yes of course I will insert my own sim in the list eventually, I am subtle that way ;)
I would like to create a chronologic list of Historically themed sims, each sim rated as authentic, fantasy or something else we may think of.
Example;

Deadwood 1876
Authentic
Western themed roleplay sim
Dresscode
Mature rating
http://www.theroadtodeadwood.com/
What do you think?
Wouldn't it be great to have a (hopefully long) list of authentic & fantasy Historically themed sims like this?
Just copy paste and add your own or other sims you've visited.

Thanks, I'd lost that link!!

I was always tickled that my places showed up in his http://nmsua.edu/tiopete/files/2010/04/register-historic-places-sl-23.pdf

What a great list, Joshooah. Thanks for posting it.

I didn't see Mont Saint Michelle listed, which is very nice & was shown on HBO's  "When Strangers Click".

I'm espeically interested in ancient historical recreations. The Minoan Empire is a good one.

I've looked for ancient Sumerian sims, but found next to nothing.  Plently of ancient Egyptian ones, though.

(Edit added 3-5-11)

The 2 sims I listed above are on the list. I just didn't see them earlier.

Château de Versailles in SL 1772

a living history project in world. The Royal Court of France in 1772 just before the end of the reign of Louis XV, le bien-aimé. The history of France is at a turning point whereas life at court continues as usual: Luxurious balls, banquets and the daily ceremonies mark the life of the people living at court.

cdv Kopie.jpg

What life you choose is your decision: Do you want to become a courtier longing for honours, political influence and wealth. Or is the rich and ambitious bourgeoisie your liking whose only objective is to be recognized by the haughty nobility. Or is it maybe your destiny to work hard to earn a living as soldier or servant? All social groups clash in the royal palace and each has its own purpose and goals.

I love the idea of Time Travelers!

I have been trying to think of a type of roleplay that would work with Time Travelers, since they could necver reveal themselves on any historical sims.

What if, timetravelers can never meet each other... Due to tghe restrictions in the space-time continum, only 1 time traveler can be in a certain region at a time. But the time travelers need to communicate with each other, and co-operate to achieve a goal.

How this would work is, one timetraveler would go back to Tombstone or whatever, and leave an item for the next time traveler. This could either be hidden someplace that only time travelers know about, or given to an inhabitant who is only told to give it to a person who matches a certain description or whatever.

This way, the regular players and the timetravelers can ineract, and the historical playuers wont know they are being used by time travelers to pass items, notes, etc between people from another time.

Does anyone want to work on a Time Traveler RP with me?

@ Caesin

Your Time Traveler premise sounds interesting & fun.

I first thought of Capt. Jack from "Dr Who" & "Torchwood". What would be the backstory for your possible team of time travelers? Perhaps they come from the future & are looking for some outlaw who's likely to interfere with the natural timestream of their reality? One person might play the perceived villan in that case, but he might have his own reasons for operating outside of the time traveler's laws. Perhaps he's looking for a long lost love, sibling or child? Maybe sims that are not quite historic, such as Steampunk ones, could be from an alternate reality timestream, as in "Sliders"?

I'd love to play along with such an scenario. I enjoy exploring historical sims, but I'm self-conscious about doing RP in SL. I've played table-top RP before & do fine when everyone gets comfortable with their characters. But when I was RPing on the old True Blood sim, I didn't feel like my character was really into the storyline. I was more of a background character or outside observer. The idea of being an outsider within the sims I explore resonates well with the way I usually feel in most RP sims anyway. I've been collecting a few outfits for different places & time periods. I also know where to get a few good free outfits ( in world & on SL marketplace). Having been involved in the Society for Creative Ananchonism (SCA) in RL has also given me a better idea of historical accuracy in dress than perhaps most people in SL have.

I'd love to play along. Might I suggest you pick a base/ home location, with a futuristic feel, where all the time travelers could meet together from time to time?

I love exploring both historical sims and those simply displaying recreations of existing (past or present) locations. Sadly, very few I've found in SL are very authentic.  Aside from Berlin, every one I've seen has made the usual concessions for SL's giant avatars and poor camera placement, leading to a less than immersive environment.

Of course, most role-play sims are more easily able to get around this by emphasizing the immersive RP the sim is built around, which helps a lot. Still, I'd like to see more accurate builds in SL someday. Whether for role-play, time traveling, or simply letting us be tourists.

I like you idea of steampunk sims being alternative timelines. As long as the sims are not too fantasy oriented (demons, elves) that idea could work well.
Plot lines.
There are the standard "altnerative history" plotlines, such as going back in time to kill Hilter. And the 1920s Berlin sim would be perfect for that RP.
People can come up with backstories and plots to suit their character,
In general we could have two factions competing to retreive all the parts of a "chronos device" or something of that nature that has been broken apart and spread throught time and space.
Some sims might agree to "host" a small object, hidden somewhere that is touch-copy so Time Travelers can pick up a copy of it and use it to complete their mission.
We could also leave maps or clues, to objects and times and locations.
I think the funnest RP would be involving the regular players of RP sims. So instead of the object being hidden on a sim, it would be given to a player who doesnt know what it is. Then the time traveler will have to RP to find it and get it from the player.
This would be quite doable on active historical sims like Tombstone, but a little bit tricker on less active ones. Some sims like the pirates of the 1700s themed Island of Jabberwock, have periodic events (sailing ship battles). So those would be good times to visit those types of sims to interact.
As for a futiuristic base.. I looked around a bit, the Dr Who ones arent very impressive.  I kind of like the Bladerunner sim. But I am open to suggestions.

As long as the unrealistic roleplay (timetravel etc) is not mentioned in public, you can roleplay whatever you want in 1920s Berlin.

The people that live there just expect 1920s realism so some may prefer not to have Police Phone boxes landing in the middle of Unter Den Linden ;)

Also, if timetravel excisted and you could actually travel back in time it would probably be essential to not let anyone know you're a timetraveler.

Going back in time is no fun if you get locked up in an asylum for the insane!

Mind you, as long as discussed in advance we're pretty much in for anything and "relaxed rules" days are coming up when we allow people to come around in modern clothing and for photoshoots, machinima, we can always make exceptions.

Just ask.

@ Caesin Skall

I looked at the Blade Runner sim & thought it looked pretty cool. Any idea what it would cost to rent a room there for the time travel group? Or maybe we could have a public lounge area to use? If you'd like space for a skybox as a home base, I have land with enough free prims, though I like the idea of being part of a futuristic sim. I found a few fairly low-prim multiple SLURL teleporters on SL Marketplace. You might want to consider one as a teleportation device for the home base. (I'll contact you in world too.)

I've been looking for a furturistic sim that could be home base for a Time Travelers RP group & I found a couple that I think are worth considering. My favorite is New Dephi. The time in 2061, post WW 3. The new city is built above what remains of old New York. A rift in time & space allows for all kinds of beings to come in now & then. A mega corporation runs the upper city, while various crime factions run the lower city.

There are 2 buildings that rent small residential flats, each at only $L 50/ 50 prims/ week. The apartments in the lower city are bigger, but have no windows. The apartments in the upper city are smaller, but have nice views of the city outside.

Neo Machina has a Japanese "Blade Runner" look to it. It has better shop spaces, but more expensive flats. I don't know how the RP plays out there or if there even is any.

Update: We have a new time traveler's group called the "Society of Temporal Sojourners". Contact Ceasin Skall for information if you're interested in joining. We're currently based in New Barataria (a small steampunk sim), but our group is fledgeling & secretive. (Please don't advertise it's presence to in-character residents.)

There was one group, The Dodge City Sims, Kansas West, Nebraska West and Texas North.... which are now closed.  Seems authentic role play was not what the average role player wanted.  The builds were built based on actual photos of the time period when they first opened and the names of the stores and saloons were taken from the same photos or newpapers for the towns of Dodge City, Ellsworth, Ogallala, Adobe Walls and Fort Griffin Flats.  The owners and admins were and still are very knowledgable about the time period and occurances that occured in those areas.  They charged nothing for the store owners in the lobby and did not expect the role players to "pay" for their sims.  All they wanted was good fun role play.  But alas, "hollywood" has invaded western role play and no one wants authentic anymore, just a script to tell them what to do.  Such a shame as We, yes I was one of the admins, put alot of thought and research into them.
