Why does shoe alpha knock out my pants alpha?

I am new and am putting together my avatar.  I bought my avatar and put on some pants... but when I put the shoe alpha on, my pants alpha detaches. ???

It's working just the way it should.  When you Wear a clothing layer, it replaces anything that is currently being worn on that layer.  You can override this by right clicking the new item and using ADD instead of Wear.  You can wear up to five things on one clothing layer.
