can anyone tell me why my desktop pc running windows 7, was running sl ok until lastnight when sl auto updated viewer2, and now it sticks at the initializing vfs screen and tells me that sl is not compatible with windows7

Not sure if it was just me but SL froze up and crashed. My event viewer said that my monitor was stuck in a loop and to check the drivers. I found driver updates that had just been released. Maybe this can help you.

 

after updating the drivers, the appearance of the water Inworld changed. Now even on the lowest graphics setting I see the shiny water. It's nice at surface level but from the air it's a little to sparkly for me.

Maybe there is a bug in the auto updating system. Try un-installing the viewer and reinstalling it manually

It's never a good idea to allow SL update the viewer. If a newer version is released and you want to install it, uninstall the existing version yourself and then download the latest version and install it. I would suggest you do that now and hopefully that will resolve your problem. If not, refer back.

To disable automatic updates, open Preferences > Setup and under Software Updates change to manual.

You will have to manually clear your cache and restart the viewer. C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\SecondLifebrowser_profile\Cache and delete everything inside that folder

if what has been suggested so far isn't working you might want to try running your viewer in XP sp2 compatibility mode you can do this by right clicking your viewer icon clicking properties then the compatibility tab if that doesn't help you can always turn the compatibility off

Just clearing the cache did not work for me. I had to delete the whole SL folder in AppData\Roaming.

 

Just Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Roaming and Delete the whole Secondlife folder.
