The 'ranks' may be there, but I certainly won't judge someone because of their 'rank' and I hope others work on the same logic too. If we all just ignored them they wouldn't even be an issue, so I've decided that's exactly what I'm going to do

So...I guess that's why you've already reached the rank of advisor, then?

Well you and I are both 'Members' (I'm wondering if a pun is intended), so we both know we didn't 'campaign' to get this rank - hence I presume that Suella had about the same input into getting her Advisor rank. Tut - no need for pettiness, people might think we're jealous - heaven forefend!

Just saying :smileyindifferent:

The ranking system divides the community. I've noticed some people with high ranks despite being a very limited contrubutor in the past. I saw someone with only 800 posts and no solutions get Advisor status. I don't see how that's possible if a weighted system is in place. How can a computerized system play favorites?

I agree totally Suspiria, frankly I'd love to see ranks and rating gone completely - if they belong anywhere they surely only belong in the Answers section - or perhaps the Technical areas.

@Mags: I think it is dangerous to presume anything about a non-transparent system that is being touted as arcanely algorithmic, while probably in practice being in the gift of a Linden or two.

But if we didn't ever presume - where would the forums be???

...  Suppose you think you have a useful comment regarding a knowledge base article.  Maybe you're just a member or even a pre-member.  You need to go find an advisor.  Probably  send them a private message begging them to please add your comment.   Then, if the advisor thinks it's OK they can add the comment.  Course it looks like it's their comment, not yours.  Don't worry, maybe they can throw u a point or something so you move up.

See?   None of that would work without seeing the ranks.

Actually, isn't this is a great example of one way in which ranks are counterproductive?  You want people who are making KB contributions to be actually knowledgable, not folks who have satisfied some automated pat-on-the-back rank.   Having to jump through hoops will disincentivize the merely informed from contributing - who wants to beg to be permitted to improve LL's still-impoverished knowledge base?   I really think KB editor permission should be based on something other than forum "rank".

Thank God the LSL portal is not included in this platform, but is staying as a wiki.

I don't think LL will eliminate the ranking system no matter what residents say - it's part of their strategy to make this a self-managing site.  Residents may be able to make suggestions as to how ranking can  be improved, though.  But not from a thread in Off-Topic.

if you're serious about it, start a thread in Community Feedback.

I don't see any reason to get rid of the ranks and their benefits. If all users could do all the same things, then some things would have to be disallowed to prevent some types of badness; i.e. if a first-time user could post porn or stuff like that, then the forums would be worse off, either because that stuff would appear or because the facility to post it would be disabled. The difference between a New Resident and a Resident prevents new people from doing that sort of thing.

For those who are opposed to the ranks, I recall that, in addition to writing here, there are more options for that opposition. See the first post of this thread:

In this new system, there is a JIRA requesting to be removed the "Ranks" and their permission to act in one way or another on the forums according to your rank.

Putting restrictions on new users is a good idea for that reason.  But that doesn't imply that their status needs to be public.  As long as the system knows  that Joe Newbie can't be trusted yet, we don't need to know that whether Joe Newbie is a Resident or New Resident.

me personally, I don't care whether they stay or go... I continue to do the same things, and don't care where my rank/role goes... well except that I'm happy to be rid of that purple icon, and dread getting a red one... but not enough to actually do anything different...

I will say that it's nice to see quiet recognition of some peoples efforts, although they seem to prefer to be unrecognized...

... and perhaps it encourages some of the more competitive types to do more, and maybe help more... although the truly competitive ones are likely to top and and disappear, but at least the community gets something out of it in the long run.
