Be sure your language preference is set correctly in Preferences>General.    Squares are used in lieu of the characters, when the character isn't supported.  I use Firestorm, and it supports Japanese, but it is still in beta.  It could be that Singularity does not support Japanese.  If Japanese isn't on the list of languages you can choose from that is probably the case.

You can also check with Singularity's support about the issue if Japanese is a preference.  It may just be a bug too.
